Science Approach is conducting a VISION workshop at the National Association of Biology Teachers annual professional development conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Using volumetric image analysis software embedded in e-learning educational materials, workshop participants will learn how to quantify differences in form and function of neurons in the enteric nervous system in humans (our second brain). The e-learning modules presented in the workshop are appropriate for advanced high school and undergraduate education. The workshop will be presented by Steven Moore and Wynne Brown. Come join us!

As reported in the last NeuroVisions newsletter, development of online laboratories based on the work of Sean Drummond, Ph.D., and Susan Tapert, Ph.D., at the University of California, San Diego, is on track. Science Approach is working with Dane Anderson, a post-bachelaureate researcher in Dr. Drummond's laboratory, to identify data and a story line for the "Your Brain Without Sleep: Analyzing How Sleep Deprivation Impacts Brain Function" online laboratory. In collaboration with Omar Mahmood, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Tapert's laboratory, an online laboratory entitled "Teen Brains on Drugs and Alcohol: Using fMRI to Assess Cognitive Damage - and Predict Future Substance Use" is being created.
Work on the other NeuroVisions laboratories is proceeding as well. During May and June 2010, Science Approach met with William Tyler, Ph.D. ("Kiss and Run and Other Models of Neurotransmitter Release: Using Advanced 2-Photon Imaging in Mice to Witness Fundamental Components of Nervous System Function"); Carsten Duch, Ph.D. ("Form and Function: Using Confocal Images of Neuron Structure to Learn About Principal Functions of Individual Nerve Cells"); and Elizabeth Gould, Ph.D. ("New Neurons for You: Verifying and Investigating Adult Neurogenesis with Imaging") to finalize plans for completing their modules by the fall of 2010.

| Review and testing of the NeuroVisions online laboratories will begin in July 2010. The Seeing GABAA Receptors at Work: Quantifying Radioligand Binding and its Modulation by Endogenous Signaling Molecules online laboratory, based on the work of Miles Orchinik, Ph.D., at Arizona State University, will be tested online by neuroscience faculty recruited at the 2009 Society for Neuroscience meeting in Chicago, Illinois. An expert panel will also review the prototype module this summer. After revising the module in response to feedback from testers and reviewers, the prototype will be tested and evaluated by panels of students at undergraduate institutions throughout the United States. |

On 15 June 2010, Science Approach presented a poster entitled "NeuroVisions: Teaching Neuroscience with Neuroimaging Data" at the 2010 NCDEU meeting in Boca Raton, Florida. Sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology and the National Institute of Mental Health, NCDEU is a scientific meeting that focuses on the latest developments in psychopharmacologic clinical research and related methodology. The meeting brings together over 1,200 academic and industry investigators, research pharmacists, and clinicians, including competitively selected New Investigator awardees. Science Approach's poster focused on development and testing of the Seeing GABAA Receptors at Work: Quantifying Radioligand Binding and its Modulation by Endogenous Signaling Molecules online laboratory being developed based on the work of Miles Orchnik, Ph.D., at Arizona State University.
