"Welcome to Atlanta! Don't drink the water -- we need it..." were the first words heard by Science Approach's CEO and staffers as we arrived at the 2007 National Association of Biology Teachers annual conference in late November. Despite the drought in the Southeast, teachers dove happily into the new activities launched at two workshops: "Who's Killing Crystal Creek?" (a middle-school lesson that combines forensics, environmental health science, and streamwater ecology) and "Warming Seas," (a high school-level exploration of phytoplankton productivity and ocean temperatures). Participants also worked with another high school lesson, "Where Did the Ozone Go?" All three activities are part of the Powers of Inquiry project. In addition, Science Approach hosted a booth where we met numerous motivated and lively teachers, all determined to find engaging resources for their students. The event was a pleasure, and we look forward to being there again next year! |
