Here’s a “cool” summertime recipe:
Mix 30 science teachers, 30 students, 10 Science Approach staffers, 5 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) scientists.
Combine with GIS, GPS, and My World GIS software.
Add two field trips (with insect repellent and raingear) to the Everglades.

Image Allow mixture to simmer at Miami’s Felix Varela Senior High School for two weeks.
What do you get?
The first of three CoastLines Summer Institutes -- and excited students and teachers!
“If school was this way all the time, I’d love to come every day,” said a student.
“This was the best professional development experience I’ve had,” said a teacher.

CoastLines is a three-year Comprehensive Project for Students and Teachers funded by the Information Technologies for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program at the National Science Foundation. It will introduce fundamental concepts about information technologies (IT) to grade 7-12 schools by involving teachers and students in using geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) to conduct scientific studies of coastal ecosystems in the National Science Foundation’s Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network.

The Baltimore LTER will host the 2009 Summer Institute. More information about the project is available at the CoastLines Web site.
