Disrupted DNA screen shotIn December, the prototype e-Learning module for Science Approach's NIH Biotechnologist project was tested by a panel of students at the University of Michigan. "Disrupted DNA: Using Bioinformatics to Understand How Mutations Can Cause Brittle Bone Disease" inaugurates Science Approach's new emphasis on e-Learning applications. Developed as a Moodle course, the module introduces learners to bioinformatics research via the online National Center for Biotechnology Information database hosted by the National Institutes of Health. In the module, undergraduate students explore how substitution mutations can result in type III osteogenesis imperfecta. The module will undergo expert review soon and be published as a free resource on Science Approach's elearning site in 2010. A Phase II SBIR proposal based on this Phase I research is anticipated.
