San Miguel High School Toured |
As part of an After-5 Mixer sponsored by the Arizona Technology Council, Steven Moore, CEO of Science Approach, visited and toured San Miguel High School in Tucson. A Catholic preparatory school, it is based on the Cristo Rey concept developed in Chicago. All of the students attending the school must work one day per week as an intern with a local business. Vans take students to their interships on work days. The revenue generated by the program pays about 60% of each student's tuition. The school focuses on STEM preparation. San Miguel recruits approximately 80% of their students from the surrounding neighborhood. There is a family income cap that favors low-income students. Most of the students are Hispanic. 100% of their recent graduates have been accepted to college and over 90% remain in college for their sophomore year.
The internship idea is an integral part of the program's success. About 2/3 of Cristo Rey network students polled recently credited their internship as the primary influence that helped them prepare for college.
